BUILDING, LITERACY, SKILLS TRADE , (BLAST)

BLAST pre-apprenticeship program is a set of services designed to prepare individuals to enter and succeed in a Registered Apprenticeship programs. Pre-apprenticeships help individuals meet the entry requirements for apprenticeship programs and ensure they are prepared to be successful in their apprenticeship.

 Skilled Trades are careers that you earn money as you learn that often require less schooling and debt than a four-year degree. These jobs are in demand for fields like healthcare, information technology, advanced manufacturing, construction and automotive. Participants will learn about the different skilled trades industries.
 Construction involves more than just wearing a hard hat. They’re jobs that require problem-solving abilities and math skills like calculating measurements, weights, and the ability to read blueprints. Travel state to state during disaster crisis or another Country. Participants will learn about carpentry, electrical, plumbers, bricklaying, elevator constructors, painters, construction management.
 Energy With a wide range of careers from lineman to pipe fitters to a power plant operator there is sure to be a career in energy that is right for you. Participants will learn alternative energy sources.
 Computer Science STEM participants will explore and learn foundational technology STEM Careers, Manufacturing, and Autonomous Vehicles. Participants will  qualify to meet enrollment into a Registered Apprenticeship program. Benefit from classroom and hands on specific training with viable career pathway opportunities.
 Literacy Intervention & High School Completion Through individualized learning participants that need 1 on 1 tutoring, online High School Completion & GED, includes Vocabulary building, Reading Comprehension, and Expository /Narrative writing skills and Remedial Math Success.
 Employable Hard/Soft Skills Development participants will be mentored through direct instruction, activities that allows them to develop the Interpersonal skills needed for the 21st century careers and workforce.
 Money Management / Financial Literacy – Participants will learn the basic principles of financial planning and money management and building credit.

Program Elements:

  • Recruitment, screening and selection for training
  • Skills Trades Apprenticeship readiness training
  • Construction worksite work experience
  • Union-Post Secondary Apprenticeship Readiness Training enrollment
  • Placement in employment
  • Follow-up services

Program Requirements:

  • 16 years or older
  • Michigan Works-DESC -MRS- DHS Referrals
  • Valid Michigan ID or Detroit ID Card-Social Security Number
  • Scores of at least level 4 in WorkKeys applied math, reading for information and locating information assessment
  • Complete a personal interview with a BLAST Mental Health, Substance Abuse Counselor and Social Worker

Program Completion Requirements:

  • Successfully complete all elements of the 8-week/240 hours of  Apprenticeship Readiness training, including compliance with attendance requirements.
  • Complete 140 hours of Apprenticeship Academic Instructions (reading, math and computer skills)
  • BLAST DETROIT Apprenticeship Readiness Competencies Based Certificate

Additional Certifications:

  1. National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC)
  2. MIOSHA-30 Construction workplace safety Certificate
  3. American Red Cross – First Aid/ Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)/ Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certificate

Placement Assistance: BLAST Program staff will work with individual program graduates on job seeking skills and resume development and will coordinate with local workforce and union partners to provide referrals to union apprenticeship training programs and to union contractors for employment opportunities.
