The Detroit Right-to-Counsel (RTC) Program

The Blackbottom Group-Blast Detroit is working with The Office of Eviction Defense to provide eviction prevention outreach to Detroiters facing rental housing evictions. The office of Eviction Defense provide free legal representation to qualifying low-income tenants facing eviction actions in Detroit’s 36th District Court.

Core Program Details

  • The Benefit: Free legal representation by an attorney to support you during your court hearing and protect your tenant rights.
  • The Location: 36th District Court (Detroit). Lawyers are stationed directly at the court during eviction hearings.
  • Eligibility Requirement:These free legal services are available for tenant households that are facing eviction and have a gross income up to twice the federal poverty level. It doesn’t matter where you come from, or your national origin – everyone qualifies for these services based on income. Before getting legal help, Blast Detroit will check if you meet the income requirements.
  • Universal Access: Status or national origin does not affect eligibility; the program is strictly based on Detroit residents household income. Income verification is required before legal aid is formally assigned.
